At first sight the stories may seem an ‘easy read’, but are actually steeped in a vast array of motifs and interpretations I would recommended reading the stories through more than once! She particularly links these motifs with food and dining which relate to gender, national and ethnic identity within her works.Īlthough I it could be argued that the collection is an ‘easy read’, I would argue that there are a multitude of interwoven themes and techniques seamlessly applied throughout the language of the collection that you may not notice the first time you read them. Lahiri includes themes of Indian culture, heritage, relationships, family and community to name a few. Each short story is self-contained but they flow together as a whole collection beautifully. However, I found that there was not a single story I did not like. I found the stories incredible and I particularly enjoyed ‘Interpreter of Maladies’, ‘A Temporary Matter’, ‘Mrs. I wrote a post detailing the collection here.
